
In 1960, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Fred Seaton set aside 8.9 million acres (3.6 million hectares) in Alaska's northeast corner, calling it the Arctic National Wildlife Range (ANWR.) Seaton did this to protect the region's "unique wildlife, wilderness and recreational values." The controversy began with the discovery of oil in 1968.
