Everything Is Beautiful


Koinophilia refers to the "averageness" principle of beauty in which a sexual creature chooses mates based on the most common or typical traits of its species. Beginning with Francis Galton in 1883 and continuing to the most recent study in 2005, researchers have repeatedly demonstrated that the most average face is also considered the most beautiful to most humans. Such research has utilized increasingly sophisticated methods of face morphing wherein the features of hundreds or thousands of faces are combined into a rough composite. This I find absolutely fascinating. What are the implications of the fact that our relentless chase after the "promise of happiness" is in actuality our passionate reach for the average?
