Southern Women in the Civil War

I used to read a lot of Civil War history.  I don't have the quotations and passages at hand.  But, I was always impressed by the courage and tenacity of the Southern women.  Often, they would cross a street to avoid a Union officer!  They sometimes seemed to me to be stronger than their men!

You definitely get a sense of their mettle from the set of their jaws in this picture!
